Adams County Humane Society is a private non-profit 501c3 organization funded entirely by donations, adoptions, services, and fundraisers. Despite our name, we are not owned or operated by the government. Our animals come in from owner surrenders, overcrowded facilities, and as strays.
We do not euthanize animals due to length of time or lack of space at ACHS. We are proud to report that in 2020, our euthanasia rate was 1.1%, in 2021 it was .4%, in 2022 it was 1.01% - one of the lowest in the state!
ACHS History
Adams County Humane Society was formed in the early ‘70’s by a group of concerned citizens. It was incorporated in 1974.
The animal control officer at the time had to shelter the animals at his farm. Eventually, this dedicated group decided that a shelter in Adams/ Friendship was needed. Through the endless hours doing fundraisers and hard work by this group of citizens, in 1988 the first Humane Society was built. Finally, a permanent home for ACHS to better help the animals of Adams County.
In 2000, plans were made to expand the shelter into a larger facility with outdoor exercise areas, and better separation of animal areas.
After a generous memorial gift given by Dr. Wesley Willard, the Board of Directors decided to add on once again in 2008, adding a surgical room, an intake room, isolation room and creating a larger cat room.
Although the number of animals has increased since 1974, we take great pride in our animal care and adoption rate. ACHS continues to strive to improve the quality of life for animals through education and adoption.
ACHS is a small shelter 100% run by donations, adoptions, services and fundraisers. We do not euthanize for space, no healthy, adoptable animal is ever euthanized. We need your support to continue our important work of helping the animals & people of Adams County & surrounding areas.
Mission and Vision
We are committed to sensibly preserving and extending the health and welfare of all animals by fostering positive relationships between pets and people, adoption, spaying and neutering, education, and promoting responsible pet ownership.

• The Adoption Team chooses the family we believe is the best fit for each animal. We do not simply pick the first application received.
• If your application is approved, our Adoption Team will contact you to schedule an appointment to meet pets and choose who to adopt.
• There are numerous reasons why an application is denied. This is based on the information you provide and if we believe the animal is a good fit for you and the members of your household, your lifestyle and home environment. The Adoption Team is not required to provide the reason for a denial.

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
