The Central Dakota Humane Society has had a shelter located three miles north of Mandan since 1994, but many people are surprised to find out that the organization has actually been doing good deeds in the community for more than 59 years. CDHS was originally formed by 12 members as the League for Animal Welfare in 1960.
There seem to be a few misconceptions about CDHS. We are not the pound. We do not euthanize healthy and adoptable animals. The members who drafted the shelter's mission in 1994 decided that we should be a no-kill shelter, which means if an animal is healthy and temperamentally sound, we will not euthanize it. We will keep the animal until it can find a loving home. The members today continue to live by this philosophy because we believe there is always the perfect guardian out there looking for the loving cats and dogs we house at the shelter.
Our main goals fall in line with our mission statement. Our first mission is to provide for, house, rehabilitate and relocate lost, strayed or homeless animals. Another important mission is to promote spaying and neutering of pets in order to cut down the number of the area's unwanted litters of puppies and kittens.
We ARE a vital partner and a needed asset in our community. Please help us continue our mission. We challenge every pet lover in the Central Dakota area to show your love for your own animals by giving back to those less fortunate - the stray, abandoned and abused creatures who find their way to our doorstep and who are eventually adopted into wonderful, forever homes.

Adoption Policy
ADOPTION PROCESSIf you are considering the responsibility of adopting a pet, and if you see a dog or cat that you are interested in adopting, you will be asked to take some time to get acquainted with the prospective pet. Dog adoptions require TWO visits prior to beginning the adoption process in order to walk, play with, and/or generally interact with the animal to ensure that the dog you choose is the right dog for your family. Sorry, no exceptions. Also, If you have another dog, we do require that you bring them out to meet with the dog you are considering adopting. Cat adoptions require one visit. It is policy with dog adoptions that everyone in your household come out to meet with the potential new pet. Remember, you're adopting a new family member that everyone needs to meet and get to know. Some animals may require additional visits depending on their individual characteristics, temperament, etc. (examples being exceptionally shy, nervous or anxious animals, or other special needs considerations). After visiting with the pet, you will be able to complete a Pre-Adoption Application. Pre-Adoption Applications are reviewed by CDHS staff to determine if approval for adoption is in the best interests of both the pet and you as the prospective guardian. Application screening may take up to seven business days for review and a decision. If approved, you will be required to read and sign an Adoption Contract. You will then be given copies of the documents you have signed, a receipt, literature, and your new pet. CDHS does not adopt out pets on a first-come, first-served basis or "hold" pets for adoptions that have not yet been approved. We strive for permanent adoptions and attempt to place animals in homes best suited for them. Adopters must be at least 18 years of age and independent. CDHS accepts cash or credit card ONLY for adoption fees. Checks will not be accepted. Please note that the Central Dakota Humane Society reserves the right to refuse adoption of animals to anyone. ADOPTION FEESAdoption Fees are used to partially offset the substantial costs incurred in the rescue, housing, feeding, and medical treatment of the shelter animals. Adult Cats (over one year old) $80.00, plus tax Kittens (under one year old) $150.00, plus tax Adult Dogs (over one year old) $250.00, plus tax Puppies (under one year old) $300.00, plus tax
