The New Nodaway Humane Society, also known as NNHS and formerly known as Nodaway Humane Society, is a no-kill animal shelter in Maryville, Missouri formed in 1985. The NNHS is a nonprofit a 501(c)3 charitable organization that focuses on animal welfare and serves communities in Northwest Missouri. Donations are the lifeline of the shelter and cover 55% of our expenses. If you are looking for a pet please consider the ones at our shelter who so desperately need a loving home. If you cannot adopt, consider helping through donation. These animals need you!

• In 2022, we took in 850 animals, 800 animals were successfully placed in loving homes or reunited – an adoption rate of 94%.
• It costs $10 a day to care for an animal; an animal’s average length of stay is 42 days.
Our History
The New Nodaway Humane Society was established with by-laws in the office of Frank Strong at 7:30 p.m. May 15, 1985. The original officers were Martha Johnson, President; Tom Carneal, Vice President: Marjo Nocks, Secretary – Treasurer. Board members were Dolores Albertini, Martha Blacketer, Mary Jackson and Jill Wittwer. The word “New” was added to the organization’s name in order to distinguish it from the former Nodaway Humane Society.
Our current facility was built in 2003, and we were able to move into the new structure in 2004. It is 7,488 square feet and features nurseries, quarantine rooms and large, separate areas for dogs and cats.
Within a month of opening our new building in 2004, our animal population doubled. Each year we expect between 600 and 800 animals will be cared for at the shelter. These include lost animals returned to their owners, adoptions processed by us or adopted through other animal rescue groups. Our efforts are to maintain a no-kill facility because we believe the animals in our care deserve a second chance at life.
Mission and Vision
Our mission is to give shelter and care to lost, abused, or unwanted dogs and cats, to advocate the humane treatment of all animals, and to reduce overpopulation through a successful spaying and neutering program.
Adoption Policy
All dogs and cats available for adoption at New Nodaway Humane Society are placed “first come, first serve” with an approved application unless otherwise stated. All adoption holds must be staff approved.

Send completed applications to newnodawayhumanesociety@gmail.com. If you have any questions or trouble, send us an email or call 660-562-3333.
If approved, we have an adoption agreement for you to sign. If the animal requires additional vetting, you can choose to take the animal home early, but you will be responsible for paying any continued vetting expenses. We will give you a contract for spay/neuter and rabies where we have a maximum amount we’ll cover. Anything over that amount, you’re responsible for paying.
If you are adopting a dog and live in Maryville city limits, you should also expect to purchase a city license tag – this is something you’ll renew each year upon vaccinating your pet. A city license tag is $5 for a neutered/spayed dog and $25 for an intact dog.
If you are considering adoption of a bully breed, our staff will ask additional questions and a home visit may be required. If there are other dogs in the home, a meet-and-greet is required. We will make every effort to make sure that your personality and the dog’s match. We reserve the right to not adopt a bully breed to a home that we feel that particular dog will not do well in.
