Mission and Vision
Originally known as the Florence Area Humane Society (FAHS), Oregon Coast Humane Society was founded in 1992 when a group of concerned animal advocates met to see what they could do to help the companion animals of the area. The shelter was completed, and the first animals were moved from foster homes in August of 1996. In the next few years, changes were made to accommodate the increasing homeless pet population. The cattery was enlarged to improve the isolation and stray facilities, kitten and puppy nurseries were added to the second floor, and storage space was converted into a staff/meeting room, as well as an additional office. In the spring of 2016, the original name was changed from Florence Area Humane Society to Oregon Coast Humane Society to reflect scope of the area serviced by our shelter. This shelter is the only facility administering to the needs of the homeless cats and dogs within a 60-mile radius of its Florence location.
Adoption Policy
At OCHS, we strive to assist adopters with every aspect of pet ownership. All of our animals come to you spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped. Our friendly, knowledgeable adoption counselors tell you all about your new pet and answer any questions you might have about caring for your pet. If there's an animal you are interested in adopting, please download and complete an Adoption Application, or come in to the shelter to complete one. Each application is reviewed by an adoption counselor who will coach you on your new pet’s needs and if need be, teach you the basic responsibilities of pet ownership. Since some of our animals are in foster homes or may be out of the shelter for the day, please call ahead at 541-997-4277 to ensure the animal is available for your visit. If there are any other dogs living in the home, a meet and greet is recommended, but not required (in most cases).
Adoptions aren't first come, first served. We try to match the right animal with the right family. We can't hold animals for any reason.
Submitting an application for an animal is not a guarantee of placement.
All adopters must be at least 21 years of age and provide a photo ID.
If you rent your home, you'll need to provide written approval from your landlord before an adoption can be completed.

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
