Sun Valley Animal Shelter, Inc., is an Arizona nonprofit corporation with 501(c)3 status which operates a No-Kill shelter in Glendale, Arizona, generally serving the western portion of the Phoenix metropolitan area.
The organization was founded in 1991 by a group of Sun City area residents as a foster-based program to provide adoption opportunities for homeless and abandoned dogs and cats. The current facility was built in 1995 and can house 70+ dogs and 70+ cats. The organization receives no government funding and is supported by income from our thrift store profits, adoption fees, membership dues, donations and bequests. We recently received a grant to assist in the construction of a new medical/surgical center at the facility.
The animals taken into our care are housed in a clean, secure environment and are spayed/neutered, microchipped, given all necessary shots and a physical exam. Dedicated volunteers are invaluable in assisting with the daily care and nurturing of our dogs and cats prior to finding a loving home. We are proud to note that in the last several years we have increased adoptions from approximately 150 animals per year to over 700 animals per year.
Our History
The organization was incorporated under the name of Sun Cities Animal Rescue (SCAR) on April 11, 1991 by its Founders, Karin Brittin and Virginia Hall of Sun City Arizona. Prior to incorporation, these ladies had been rescuing lost cats and finding homes for them.
A group of Sun City volunteers was formed, and the goals were expanded to include both cats and dogs that had been abandoned or lost. This group of volunteers solicited enough seed money to contemplate the construction of a bona fide animal shelter which was a massive undertaking necessitating an immense effort. Meanwhile, SCAR established a voluntary network of foster homes to care for animals until permanent adoptive homes could be found for them. A Sun City bank fortuitously extended SCAR two loans in order to construct our present facilities which were completed for occupancy in 1995.
What started out as two caring ladies in Sun City rescuing stray cats has evolved to an exceptional shelter facility that finds homes for over 1,000 cats and dogs every year. The name was changed to Sun Valley Animal Shelter in 2007.
We are very fortunate to have wonderful volunteers who help our staff with the day to day operations. We don’t get any federal or state funding, and we rely upon 70% of our funding for our shelter from the generosity of the public.
Mission and Vision
Our mission is to provide humane housing, care and companionship for homeless dogs and cats in a comfortable setting which meets their physical and emotional needs until such time as adoption or other placement is secured.
We are committed to cooperating with other area organizations dedicated to the rescue and care of homeless animals and to achieving humane solutions to the problem of pet overpopulation.
Vision Statement – Providing leadership and educating the community on animal welfare issues, we are the West Valley’s premier animal shelter, giving compassionate interim care with the goal of making successful, lasting partnerships between people and pets.
Reduce euthanasia rates by increasing shelter adoptions, foster respect for animals and the responsibility of pet guardianship, and provide community awareness of the need to eliminate animal suffering due to abuse, neglect and ignorance.
Adoption Policy
Adoption Process
Application
Interested in adopting a new furry family member? Every successful adoption begins with our match-making process. Once you have reviewed each animal’s bio and have an idea of who you are interested in adopting, you would then fill out an adoption application. This questionnaire is completed in person as we do not currently have an online application. This helps our adoption counselors get an idea of every two and four legged friend already in the home.
We do cut off adoptions at 3:15pm daily to provide our adoption counselors time to feed and clean the animals for the evening time.
Adoption Interview
After filling out an application, our adoption counselors sit down with our potential adopters to get to know what they are looking for in their next cat or dog. We prefer to be transparent with every adopter, and discuss the needs of each animal. This is also the perfect moment to ask any questions pertaining to that specific pet.
Meet-and-Greet
If it is a match, we move forward with scheduling meet & greets. Every home and every pet is different, so we do not guarantee a same day adoption. Adopting a pet is a huge commitment and SVAS is here to make sure every adoption is successful. We look forward to helping you adopt your next furry family member!
Adoption Requirements
• You must have an Arizona residence, as we do not do out-of-state adoptions.
• You also must be over the age of 21
