Utah Friends of Basset Hounds started in the fall of 2002 by a group of five, Peggy Chudd, Jennifer Heighton, Toni Moore, Shawn Blaser, and John Nish. In the first two years, we had 15 adoptions. In the last two years, UFBH has had 175 Basset Hound adoptions and we continue to grow. We currently have over 75 dogs in our care, many of those permanent Forever Fosters who will remain with us until the end of their lives.
Purpose Statement
Serving our local and statewide communities, Utah Friends of Basset Hounds, Inc. provides:
• Education to the public and prospective homes about the Basset Hound breed.
• Shelter and care for homeless Basset Hounds.
• Assistance, when needed, to anyone owning a Basset Hound so as to keep the dog in a good environment.
• Placement in suitable foster and permanent homes for all dogs taken into our care.
• Financial and emotional support, when needed, to our foster and adoptive homes using the dogs’ best interest as a guide.
• Fundraising events in order to care for all dogs taken in by our rescue.
• Education about spaying and neutering in order to decrease pet overpopulation and random breeding.
• Placement assistance to state and local animal shelters for Basset Hounds and mixed breeds.
Mission and Vision
Uttah Friends of Basset Hounds, Inc., a federally recognized 501(c)(3) public charity, is a Basset Hound rescue group who provides veterinary care, food, shelter and support to Basset Hounds needing assistance in Utah. We treat these animals with care and respect. UFBH makes decisions based on compassion and with concern for the quality of life of each individual Basset Hound. We place Basset Hounds in our care into foster homes and permanent homes with consideration to personality, behavior, and special needs. We provide continuing support to adoptive families throughout the lifetime of the dogs.
We work in direct cooperation with all local and state shelters to reduce euthanasia of Basset Hounds. Of the Bassets we rescue and care for, approximately 40% come from these shelters. The other 60% of our Bassets are surrendered by their current owners directly into UFBH care. By taking in Bassets surrendered by their owners, UFBH helps ease the burden on our local animal shelters by preventing those Bassets from ever entering the animal shelter system.

Adoption Process
Home Checks
After you have submitted an adoption application and completed a phone interview with the Adoption Coordinator, a home visit will be scheduled. UFBH looks for answers to following questions during the home visit:
• Would I allow my Basset Hound to live in this home? (We are not looking at housekeeping skills; rather, we want to know about the family’s lifestyle, and whether there is room for a Basset Hound in their lives.)
• Does the applicant have time to spend with the Basset?
• Do all the family members want a Basset Hound?
• Is the housing arrangement Basset friendly? Is there a fenced yard?
• Is anyone allergic to dogs?
Upon Approval
If you are approved for adoption, it is simply a matter of finding the best match between you and the Basset Hounds we have available. This may be a quick process or it may take some time, depending on the age, sex, or personality you desire. Younger Bassets and females usually necessitate a longer wait. When the perfect Basset Hound becomes available, the Adoption Coordinator will refer the applicant to the foster family for meeting time arrangements. So long as the meeting is successful, the foster family will review any special advice or suggestions for your new Basset and you will sign the Adoption Contract and take your new Basset Hound home.

Get your dog the safe enrichment they need by renting a Sniffspot

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
David is based in Salem, MA.
