Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue is a nonprofit rescue organization that is 100% run by volunteers. All of our team members work full-time jobs in addition to volunteering with RMAR. Our rescued pets are currently located in Foster Homes throughout Alberta, BC and on occasion, Ontario. Please send in Adoption Application or email with inquiries.
Our organization focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating, matching adopters to the perfect pet for their lifestyles. We rescue homeless cats and dogs, puppies and kittens, from some of the most unforgiving places within Canada, Mexico, California, and other places all around the world – including, but not limited to, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kosovo, Turkey and Korea. Our motto is “Nowhere is too far… For RMAR”.
When Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue was first conceived, Rory O’Neill’s focus was on the rescue of highly adoptable dogs and cats on death row in overcrowded animal shelters in Canada. She was also bringing in homeless dogs and puppies from the Stoney Nakota Reservation in the town of Morley, near Calgary. Her experience as a dog behaviourist allowed her to fully rehabilitate these animals and place them for adoption.
From there, knowledge of the Mexico dumping grounds and hoarders came to light after viewing its desperate situation on an episode of Cesar Millan’s The Dog Whisper. They had crossed the California border into Tijuana (a very impoverish Mexican town) with Animal Advocates on a rescue mission to save some dogs in one of the dumping grounds. Rory quickly contacted Animal Advocates and began working along with them to coordinate more rescues.
Within a few months, the first transport of six amazing little Chihuahuas and mixes flew from Los Angeles to the Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue for adoption in Canada. Meanwhile, rescue efforts for homeless animals on Calgary’s reservations continued.
These successful rescues were the reason Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue grew to a place where they could get involved with Natural Disaster missions as well. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Rory O’Neill and her closest team of volunteers flew in to rescue the animals that were left behind in the mess.
Now, Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue continues to rescue animals from some of the most unforgiving places worldwide – and to be the go-to organization for natural disaster missions.
Mission and Vision
Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and find forever homes for highly adoptable animals who simply come from unfortunate circumstances.
We are a registered non-profit organization that has been in operation since 2000 and has rescued thousands of animals. Our sanctuary is private and located in Alberta, with most of our rescues being fostered in home environments to promote full rehabilitation.
Adoption Policy
We want your adoption to succeed, not just for a day, but Furever!
Step 1
Learn about the animals available for adoption! You can find all the animals available for adoption here. On each pet’s profile, you will find information about where the animal came from, their temperament, best match, and more! Remember, while we try our very best to keep an animal’s current adoption status updated, we can’t guarantee the pet you’re interested in is still available.
Step 2
Fill out an online adoption application, which you can find on each animal’s profile, on the right side of the page. Please make sure to take the time to answer all questions in as much detail as possible. This will help us determine the best animal to match your lifestyle.
Step 3
Send the requested photos. Immediately after you complete your application, you should receive an email from our adoption team requesting several pictures of your home and your family. This step allows us to by-pass the home-checks, as we do adopt animals in many different areas. Your application will not be reviewed if you do not send the requested pictures.
Step 4
Be patient! We will review your application and reach out to you if we think you might be a fit for one of our animals. Our adoption coordinator will schedule a phone interview to determine the best match for you and the animal.
Step 5
If both parties think it’s a good match, we will book an adoption appointment. This is a customized session designed around the animal you may adopt. We will provide information to help ensure the smoothest transition possible for your new family member into your home.
Some animals will be ready to go to their new homes right away, others may need a few informational/bonding sessions first!
