Founded in 2020 by a group of animal advocates in Lincoln, Nebraska, Brave Animal Rescue is a nonprofit 501(C)(3) volunteer-based animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing homeless kittens, cats, dogs, and puppies. By working with a network of volunteer advocates, foster caregivers, local veterinarians, and shelters, Brave Animal Rescue is able to help hundreds of animals every year by pulling animals from high-kill shelters, by working hands-on rescuing orphaned kittens, by aiding in local Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) efforts, and by helping those who are no longer able to care for their pets. We provide these animals with care and temporary homes until we are able to place them in permanent homes. Brave also aims to serve as a resource to our community by providing information about pet ownership, spaying and neutering, veterinary care, and TNR.
The founders of Brave Animal Rescue are life-long animal advocates who have several years of experience working with other nonprofit animal groups throughout the Midwest. Through these experiences on the forefront of rescue, the founders quickly began to recognize a need in the community for a neonatal-focused rescue. The vast majority of animals that are surrendered to animal shelters are under the age of 18 months old. According to The Humane Society of the United States, 80% of kittens are born outside. Without intervention, these kittens go on to procreate, get killed (by disease, vehicles, predators, etc.), or end up in shelters. Unfortunately, kittens and puppies under 8 weeks old are the population most at-risk for being euthanized in shelters due to a lack of resources and foster homes. With a passion for newborn kittens and puppies, and drive to help the community, the founders of Brave Animal Rescue aim to end the cycle of unwanted companion animals through education, rescue, and spaying and neutering.
Adoption Policy
THE RESCUE & ADOPTION PROCESS
RESCUE - There are a variety of reasons why animals end up in our care. We take in many local cats and kittens in an effort to support Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) initiatives. We firmly believe spaying and neutering community cats is the answer to lowering feline euthanasia rates in shelters. We also frequently rescue dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens from high-kill animal control agencies and shelters in the South and Midwest. Often, being pulled by a rescue is their only hope of survival. We also work with individuals who are no longer able to care for their pet. No matter the situation, we do our best to provide direct support or resources.
FOSTER - Brave Animal Rescue is a foster home-based rescue, meaning our animals are cared for in our homes and we do not have a physical shelter. When a pet is rescued, they take refuge in a foster home where they have all the time they need to decompress and adjust. Our pets are truly treated like family in their foster homes. Our volunteers show incredible love, patience, and commitment to getting our rescues ready for your family. They work on potty training, basic commands, and anything else they might need before being adopted. Our foster homes are the cornerstone of our rescue!
VETERINARY CARE - Before adoption, we ensure our pets are healthy and that they have received any treatment they need. All cats and kittens are spayed/neutered, dewormed, treated for fleas/ticks as needed, microchipped, FIV/FeLV tested, and receive age-appropriate vaccinations. Our dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, dewormed, treated for fleas/ticks as needed, microchipped, heartworm tested when appropriate, and receive age-appropriate vaccinations. We often acquire animals needing further veterinary care and we are committed to getting them the treatment they need.
APPLY - We promote our pets through a variety of channels including websites like Petfinder and Adopt-A-Pet, Facebook, Instagram, and in-person events. When you see a pet you’re interested in adopting, the first step is to fill out the application found on our website. We are an all-volunteer staff and will review your application within the 1-5 days. Preference is given to applicants with verified vetting history, home ownership, and, for dogs, those with a fenced in yard. (Please make sure to call your previously used veterinarian and give them permission to release records to us.)
MEET - After your application to adopt is approved, we can hopefully set up a time for you to meet our pet! We require all family members are present to ensure it is a great match for all. For dog and puppy adoptions, we ask that you bring your resident dogs to meet the dog/puppy you would like to adopt. NOTE: due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are taking special precautions to ensure the health of our foster parents, our adoption coordinators, and our adopters. This means we temporarily may not be able to accommodate meet and greets of entire litters, and you may be asked to meet the foster parent/pets via Zoom to ask questions about the animal's care.
ADOPTION - If during the meet and greet all parties are in agreement the pet is a match for you, you are able to adopt and take home that day! We will always coordinate the specifics with you beforehand to ensure the adoption process is smooth-going and stress free. Because we are a foster home-based rescue, we either rent a facility to hold the adoptions or hold them in an adoption coordinator's home. We are committed to being a resource and source of encouragement for our adopters for the lifetime of their Brave Rescue pet. We look forward to working with you!
