Manitoba Underdogs Rescue, a registered charity and non-profit organization, operates on a foster home-based model with a dedicated volunteer team exceeding five hundred individuals. Our core mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, provide care for, and ultimately find permanent, loving homes for Manitoba’s unwanted dogs.
On a typical stormy Manitoba summer night in July 2011, our first Underdog Annie was found abandoned and scared on the side of the highway near Brokenhead First Nations. She was immediately brought to a veterinary hospital and unfortunately tested positive for heartworm and lyme disease. A garage sale was organized by our fearless leaders to cover the costs of Annie’s treatment. From this one act of rescue, Manitoba Underdogs was born!
Our Values
• Work alongside Manitoban communities to bring dogs in need into care.
• Provide the highest level of foster and veterinary care to all dogs in our foster and adoption programs.
• Maintain a safe and welcoming community for our volunteers, fosters, adopters and partners.
• Provide advice and support to fosters and adopters with the goal of maintaining successful relationships between dog and owner.
• Partner with local organizations to help control animal population in Manitoba.
Mission and Vision
Manitoba Underdogs Rescue is a registered charity and non-profit organization. We are foster home based with a volunteer team of over 600 individuals. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, care for, and ultimately seek out permanent and loving homes for Manitoba’s unwanted animals.
Adoption Policy
Our adoption process is all about finding the perfect match for our Underdogs and making sure they land in loving and compassionate homes.
If you haven’t checked out our pups up for adoption yet, give them a look. And when you’re ready to take the plunge, follow these four steps!
Step 1: Get the Ball Rolling
To kick things off, we’ll need you to fill out our adoption application. Since our Underdogs hang out in foster homes, we like to get to know you a bit. But don’t worry, it’s a breeze and won’t take up much of your time. Just be honest and thorough because we want to make sure we find you the perfect match that fits your unique lifestyle.
Step 2: Let’s Get Acquainted
Alright, you’ve got that pre-approval email, so now it’s time to reach out to the foster home and set up a date with the pup you’re interested in. Keep in mind, we’re all volunteers here, so it might take a little time to make those plans. If everything goes well during your meet and greet and you and the dog are vibing, it’s on to the next step: the home visit. And don’t stress, we’re not looking for picture-perfect homes here!
Step 3: Home Sweet Home Visit
Reach out to your assigned Home Visit Volunteer! The home visit can be done virtually or in-person. It’s a straightforward check to ensure your new fur baby is headed to a great space. We’ll look for things like a safe yard and where your dog will be catching those Z’s. And while you’re at it, our adoption contract needs to be signed, and the adoption fees need to be squared away. E-transfer is preferred, but we also accept cheques and cash.
Step 4: Let’s Seal the Deal
Once you’ve passed the home visit with flying colors, you’ll receive the coveted “approved” email. We’ll reconnect you with the foster home to set a date for your new family member to head home.
Just a friendly reminder: your new dog may need some time to adjust, so don’t worry if they seem a bit nervous or different than they did in their foster home. If you have any concerns or issues along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out to us – we’ve got your back!
