I first became aware of Second Chance Ranch Rescue as an adopter. My husband and I had only had one dog that we had adopted from our local SPCA, and she had passed the week of Thanksgiving 2021. Our dog was perfect to us, but we knew if anything happened to us she would have had a difficult time in a shelter. She had crate anxiety, noise phobia, dog reactivity and general anxiety. After we said goodbye we realized that Abby had taught us too much not to pay it forward and open our hearts and home again. Second Chance Ranch Rescue (SCRR) fell onto our radar because of their mission: helping misunderstood dogs. At her core Abby, our last dog, was misunderstood to everyone but us. I began following them on Facebook and became invested in the story of Isabella, a 6-7 year old pocket Pitbull who needed to be the only dog in a home that also didn't have children. SCRR was having such a hard time finding a home for her, and throughout all of it they couldn't understand it because Isabella LOVED people and was such a gentle dog. I followed her story for months, all while saying I wasn't ready to adopt. After Isabella had been there for over 4 months with no applications my husband and I reached out to SCRR to see if we could meet Isabella and see if it was a fit. What I loved about the rescue immediately is that they spent so much time talking to us about Isabella, her needs and explaining why she needed to be the only dog. They were candid with her challenges for dog reactivity and also discussed what they had been working on with her to help with it. We talked at length about ourselves, our prior dog, and the challenges she faced and how we worked on those. It was clear that as much as we were interested in Isabella, they were considering what dog we would be a good fit for. That day we met two dogs, one we hadn't even had on our radar, and Kristin who is in charge was candid about both dogs. Most importantly she didn't force an adoption on us at all. She wanted to give us room to consider the adoption and be sure that we were ready to open up to Isabella. We very quickly decided on the way home that we were. Shortly after adopting Isabella I began volunteering with them. I was blown away by just how much they did to provide enrichment for the dogs in their care, that they worked on behavioral issues to be sure they understood them and would be able to find the best fit for the dogs. I watched them invest so much time in meet and greets for dogs and make the hard decision to say no to some adoptions because things weren't perfect -- dogs didn't get along, the adoptable dog didn't get along with each member of the family. Whatever the reason there was no shame to the families involved but they wanted to do right by the dog and the family. The job they do is HARD. But throughout all of it they are truly some of the most compassionate people you could ever hope to meet. The mission statement on their website is the cornerstone for how they conduct themselves daily, and they are unwavering in their commitment to the dogs in their care and the families they support. And the best thing about them is the surrenders you DON'T hear about. That they provide assistance and guidance to people in the community to try to help situations work whenever possible.

We are the St. Pierre's. Helen and Jake, and our daughters Grace and Evelyn. We absolutely love animals and Helen runs and owns a professional dog training business and facility, so our dogs are thought of as members of our family. We have dogs, cats, parrots, rats, a tortoise, pigs, and a horse all at home with us. Helen started fostering dogs when she began training, over 18 years ago, and gradually discovered over time the desperate need for willing fosters and organizations that supported senior dogs. One by one, she began taking in senior or hospice dogs, and giving them the care they needed and a soft place to land until they were ready to pass on. In return, they taught her more in just a few months than she could have learned in a lifetime without them. Now, we take senior or hospice dogs into our home and give them the retirement they so deserve. We also actively support, foster when needed, and help care for other senior, hospice or special needs dogs all over the country, in shelters and in rescue. Our mission is to show others how much a senior dog can enrich a home, make a wonderful companion, and give the gift of unconditional love, no matter how long their time is with you. Even if you can't bring one into your home, you can still help and support our mission! We are a registered 501(c)3 with the state of New Hampshire.

Second Chance Ranch Rescue helps dogs that other rescues can't, and that makes them unique. They are also in the process of building a new facility, and exposure will help them save even more at-risk pups. We took in a dog because we was going to be shot by his owner in rural NH for being "aggressive" (read aggressive owner= big scared dog). We quickly called in a favor and found Bogey a spot in a typical rescue kennel. Within three days he was shaking, growling, and not eating. We couldn't leave him like that (and he'd never get adopted in that condition) so we picked him up and worked with him at our house while we found another placement. One of our other dogs Saint got along with Bogey but their lack of confidence from traumatic pasts was not a safe combination long-term. He and my husband had difficulty as he was fearful of men in high-intensity situations. We were very honest with the rescues we reached out to about his multiple past owners and that one said he was aggressive. And that we perceived him as reactive, and a new owner will have to be a perfect match and do training and be careful. I reached out to dozens and dozens of rescues over nine months and nobody would take Bogey. Until Second Chance. They assessed him and agreed that this dog is not a bad seed but needs solid training and a capable owner. They took him in and retrained him and found the perfect, female owner and he is doing great. I've seem photos of him back for boarding and he looks totally happy. I was getting close to considering euthanasia. I knew that eventually something bad would happen if he stayed with us. We couldn't afford intensive training as we had another doing undergoing cancer treatments. We have rescue dogs, chickens and horses living happily on our little farm. If I had euthanized Bogey it would have forever changed my relationship with animal rescue. How could I take in any more after putting Bogey down like that? But Second Chance kept that from happening when no one else could. We have since become supporters and are even helping with some of the construction plans for the new facility. Second Chance Ranch Rescue deserves this recognition because they are professional, caring, and most importantly fills a critical role in the dog rescue network that nobody else does.
