Pawfect Match is an incredible organization that helps so many dogs find their forever home. I adopted my dog from them 10 years ago and she is still the perfect match for our family. The folks involved are all caring and devoted. We know rescuing animals is rewarding but also takes a very dedicated life to choose. I am thankful for them and all the rescuers out there for making a difference.

I adopted my first dog through Charley’s, her name was Peach and she was 1.5 years old when I got her, she was a beautiful pitbull with the biggest smile and I loved her and she loved me, sadly we saw behavioral issues develop, Charley’s helped us give her a “camp” to work on her obedience and see if her anxiety and behaviors would minimize. They did not, we had to put her down due to BE. It shattered me but I didn’t want to lose my love for dogs. Charley’s allowed me to foster many dogs so my heart wouldn’t close off due to this. After time, they went out of their way to find me the perfect dog. A puppy in a shelter all alone. One I could work with from the beginning and teach her. I continued to foster, Charley’s makes personal connections and pairs you with your perfect pup. they are the best rescue in the world!

Courtney works tirelessly to help dogs in need due to medical issues, congenital defects, injuries, neglect, abuse or just when an owner can no longer care for a beloved pet. I have been fostering for Mountain Pet Rescue since they started. They are an amazing rescue that has saved so many animals and placed them in loving homes. They never leave the mom when they rescue a cat or a dog with a litter. They take the hard cases that other rescues don’t. They recently saved a neurological puppy, Tocho, who couldn’t walk for the first few months of his life. They sent him for an MRI and a spinal tap to diagnose him. Now he is living a wonderful life with their awesome care. I am very proud to be a foster mom for MPR!

The adoption application was easy to fill out and got a response very quickly. Also how they support the local community by providing food for people who are having a hard time feeding their pets. Saving Grace – Animals for Adoption

    Chapel Hill

Saving Grace began in 2004 at a private residence and farm to bring adoptable dogs and loving homes together. North Carolina is one of the highest states for euthanasia in the country and our mission is to make an impact. Since beginning, we've placed over 30,000 animals, however the task is still daunting. Saving Grace partners with shelters with extremely limited resources where euthanasia rates are high across North Carolina to find adoptable dogs that just need a second chance. We also take a lot of dogs in need of critical care or in dire situations from them as well. Animals are chosen based on their adoptability as successful family members and Saving Grace strives to provide a more natural and non-traditional shelter environment for dogs to interact with others and exhibit their natural behaviors while awaiting their forever homes. Our Funny Farm setting allows adopters to mingle and interact with a variety of dogs and choose a new companion based on temperament and suitability for their home and family. Saving Grace is operated in majority by a hardworking and dedicated volunteer and foster base. This team is dedicated to finding an ever-changing but always special group of dogs an equally special family like yours. From intake to adoption, dogs are cared for by a support system of committed fosters and volunteers. Volunteer roles include everything from transportation, daily care, medical care, and everything in between to get them ready for adoption.

Love Mutts Rescue, Inc. (LMR) is a non-breed-specific dog rescue operating in central North Carolina and south central Virginia. We are a volunteer based, non-profit corporation run by a Board of Directors, and IRS designated 501(c)-3 charity. We rescue dogs in need from the surrounding communities, provide them with appropriate medical care, and place them in foster homes where they can be loved and nourished while they await their forever home. It is our goal to help all dogs that come into our rescue find the families that are destined to be theirs. Love Mutts Rescue was founded to provide a group of people an avenue to rescue animals from shelters. These shelters, and anyone who turns over a stray, can depend on LMR to provide these animals with proper vetting, nurturing fosters to care for them until they are adopted, and places to have adoption events so the rescue & the rescued can interact with potential adopters. We rely on volunteers to open their homes to foster, which is the only limiting factor to save more lives.

Emotional Rescue is a fantastic group who gives medical attention to any disabled stray dogs in their area and beyond. Most of these dogs would be euthanized if it weren't for them. They are so caring of each and every dog that comes to them. It really is an emotioal commitment and must be so very challenging for them seeing the condition these dogs are in when they come to their rescue. The dogs are very well cared for and it really shows. They get every bit of veterinarian care needed. Watching some of the transformations is mind blowing. I am very happy to be a devoted fan.

Second Chance Pet Adoptions is amazing, I started as a volunteer years ago and loved them so much when a position came available I jumped on the opportunity. They take time to work with each family to ensure the very best match, they hand assess and select dogs from small rural shelters locally to them which ensures all funds raised stay in their communities. Animals are cared for from start to finish and adopters become family!

Heidi takes on some of the worse cases of neglect I’ve seen, Biggie was a dog that she took in after being shot in the face. She nursed him back to health. She has truly been an angel to many of the underdogs! Also If a family loves their dog and has an emergency situation she will pay for the vet care so that the dog can stay with the family. Most rescues won’t help a dog unless the dog is surrendered to the rescue.

Saving Grace – Animals for Adoption

How can I adopt a rescue dog in North Carolina?

Using our list of the top dog rescues and shelters, you can find a reputable shelter in North Carolina. The adoption policies of each shelter varies and you can find information on the shelter profile page. Here is an example adoption policy:
The first step is to fill out our adoption application. All applicants must be at least 21 years of age. Once we receive your application, the second step will be for our volunteers to check your vet reference and talk with your personal references. The third step, if your application is approved, is for our volunteers to contact you about scheduling a home check. This is not to see what kind of house you live in or how clean or dirty it is. It is simply to see if the yard size, fencing, etc. is compatible with your dog of interest. It also allows other animals in your household as well as children to meet your potential new dog to see if everyone will get along and to make sure this is truly a 'pawfect' match! After all three of these steps are completed, the final step is to sign the adoption contract and make the adoption donation fee. Your new pet will be up to date on the necessary vaccinations required by the age of the dog at time of adoption, spayed or neutered, on heartworm preventative and flea and tick meds, micro-chipped, groomed, and well on his or her way with basic obedience and house training. All our dogs will be adopted out with a microchip, collar and leash, and a PMR&R tag.
