Scout's Honor rescues animals from city pounds, including animals from Houston's local animal shelters. Scout's Honor also takes in animals living on the streets. We do not limit our program to healthy animals or particular breeds, and we often save animals from abusive situations. Scout's Honor provides these beautiful creatures with a second chance to be placed in loving, permanent homes so that they can receive the love and attention they sorely deserve. Since our formation, Scout's Honor has rescued over 3,000 animals and currently has over 80 dogs and cats in our program! Scout's Honor's rescue program is "foster based"; that is, each of the animals we rescue is placed in a temporary foster home, where it receives much-needed love, care, and structure while it waits for its permanent home. We could not exist without our wonderful foster parents. If you are interested in becoming a foster parent or in learning more about fostering for Scout's Honor, please click on our "Fostering" link and read more! Unfortunately, Scout's Honor is unable to take in each animal about which we are contacted. We simply do not have enough money, fosters, or other necessary resources to help all the stray and neglected animals in the Houston area (and, believe us, there are an overwhelming number of needy animals in Houston!). Our ability to take in a dog or cat depends on our current funding, our volunteers, and whether we have an available foster home. Many times we are forced to close our intake when we run low on any of these. We never wish to turn away an animal in need, but sometimes we do not have the luxury to choose. We have the most amazing dogs and cats in our program! Indeed, we are almost a "one-stop-shop" for any type of dog you might want. At any one time, we have all different types of breeds and mixed breeds—from small to large. And do not forget about our kitties! Mission and Vision

Scout's Honor Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue organization that focuses on rescuing and placing homeless, neglected, or abused dogs and cats in Houston, Texas and surrounding areas. Scout's Honor was formed in May 2006, and is headed up by a group of animal lovers whose aim and love for animals is to make a difference in the Houston area's homeless pet population, especially those dogs and cats that others will not or are not able to help. Scout's Honor is often the last resort for animals who are left abandoned to die in pounds or on the streets.

Adoption Policy

Saving a life. Making a Best Friend. Scout's Honor Rescue thanks you for seeking to adopt a rescue animal! Our goal is to place our rescued pets in permanent, loving homes. If you would like to fill out an application for adoption, please click HERE. Please make sure you fill out the application completely, signing and initialing where applicable. Because our goal is to place our animals in the best homes possible, we cannot adopt dogs or cats on a "first come, first served" basis. Instead, we make every attempt to match families with the most compatible pets. SCOUT'S HONOR ONLY ADOPTS DOGS AND CATS TO RESIDENTS OF HOUSTON OR THE IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING AREA. Adoption Fee: The customary adoption fee for pets is $150.00 for dogs and $85.00 for cats. Scout's Honor is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization, and your adoption fee is tax deductible (a receipt will be sent to you within the calendar year of the adoption). These fees include the pet's spay or neuter, vaccinations, and microchip (including other vetting as necessary while the pet is in our care). Because Scout's Honor is a nonprofit organization, we exist solely on donations, and these fees help us defray the costs of spaying/neutering, testing, and vaccinating our pets. However, these fees rarely cover all of our expenses. Adoption Process: Once you fill out and return the application, a Scout's Honor representative will review the application, contact your veterinarian (if applicable) to do a "vet check," and will contact you to inform you whether your application has been approved or declined. This process usually takes only 24 to 48 hours. Because of the number of animals in our program and our limited personnel, Scout's Honor asks that you fill out the application prior to meeting the animal. This saves time for both parties. Once your application is approved, we will coordinate a time for you to meet your potential new adoptee! Scout's Honor requires a home visit. Once you meet the pet and fall in love and a home visit is conducted, your new baby can go home with you! After-Adoption: As a general procedure, if your application is approved and the adoption is consummated by the signature of a Scout's Honor representative, you will receive copies of your new pet's vet records via email within approximately forty-eight (48) hours so that you may schedule a visit with your veterinarian. Although all Scout's Honor pets are fully vetted, Scout's Honor strongly recommends that you take your new pet to your regular veterinarian as soon as possible to have a physical exam and to get your pet started on heartworm and flea preventative. Heartworm preventative MUST be administered to your pet once a month. As a next step, Scout's Honor will then send via regular mail a signed copy of this application to you, along with the "hard copy" vet and microchip records and rabies tag, within two weeks. Please keep this information in a safe place. Estimated Age and Breed of Pet: Because the animals in Scout's Honor Rescue's adoption program are rescued, we do not know their actual ages and often have to estimate the breed. The approximate age/breed of the pet in which you are interested is estimated using our experience and the advice of our veterinarians. Often times, different veterinarians may approximate different ages or breeds for the same pet, which may appear on their respective records. Scout's Honor thus uses reasonable efforts to approximate an appropriate age and estimate an appropriate breed or breed mix, but makes no affirmative representation that the approximate age/breed is the actual age/breed of the pet. The Acclimation Period: Any adopted pet, whether rescued or not, needs time to adjust to its new home environment. Our pets are typically kept in foster homes, and our foster parents use best efforts to housetrain/crate train each pet, although be aware that your new pet may require an adjustment period. Because of a shortage of foster homes, some of our pets are kept in a kennel, and a little extra work may be required to acclimate your pet to its new home. Scout's Honor has handouts on housetraining and cratetraining that we can provide to you to help in the initial transition period. David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners. Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature. David is based in Salem, MA.
